Tennis is a multifaceted game. Being an effective tennis player requires that you make use of several different aspects of the sport. Jack will help you with all of them using the coaching skills that he has developed from teaching tennis for over 40 years.
A good (or even better, a great) serve can take you a long way in tennis. Some of the best tennis players in the world such as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Serena Williams rely on their devastating serves to give them the edge over their competition.
There are many different types of serves such as flat, topspin, kick or slice. Generally speaking, you will want to use a topspin or kick serve and use more spin (to obtain better accuracy) on your second serves. Jack will be able to help you with any style of serve you choose to employ, however.
Former professional tour player Goran Ivanisevic had a somewhat up and down career, but he was able to win the 2001 Wimbledon on the back of his dominating serve.
The forehand is the most recognizable stroke in tennis. It is the stroke that is made from the baseline from the dominant side of your body. Given that it is the most common shot, it can in some ways be classified as the foundation of your tennis game. It is important that your forehand is consistent, powerful and accurate.
Rafael Nadal can dominate the game with his forehand and Roger Federer may have the greatest forehand of all time. That tells you how important a good forehand is.
Today some players use a two hand forehand, although Jack recommends a one handed forehand for most. There are several different possible forehand grips and Jack will work with you to find one that is comfortable for you to use.
While tennis players generally tend to naturally favor their forehand, a solid backhand is a necessity for anyone wishing to have success on the court. By training the backhand properly, the stroke can become an effective offensive weapon for you.
Andre Agassi during his prime used his textbook backhand to help him overcome his lack of height and power.
Jack himself uses a one handed backhand although he recommends that his students use two hands for additional power. The backhand is not an intuitive stroke and Jack's expert eye will diagnose exactly how your backhand should look.
The skill of volleying involves not just how you hit the shot, but when to come to the net in the first place and how to position yourself when you are there. Being able to aggressively volley effectively will make you into a feared player on the court.
The best net player in tennis today is Sergiy Stakhovsky. He used an effective serve and volley game to upset Roger Federer in 2013's Wimbledon.
But you do not necessarily need to be tall and powerful like Stakhovsky to have an effective volley. Retired greats such as Jack Kramer and John McEnroe had excellent volleys despite not being physically imposing players.
Although this shot appear simple, a lob actually requires a great deal of skill and precision. A good lob can be your offense (by punishing an overly aggressive net player) and your defense (by buying you time to get back into position). Jack believes that the most under appreciated shot in tennis and he makes sure that a consistent lob is in the tool bag of each one of his students.
Playing doubles tennis involves a whole host of issues that do not come up in singles play. Knowing how to communicate with your partner and how you will both share the court is critical for both the offensive and defensive aspects of doubles tennis.
Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver were the greatest doubles team of all time. Although both were excellent players in there own right, Navratilova and Shriver were able to use impeccable on court communication along with their excellent playing chemistry to achieve unparalleled doubles success.
